Many students in China awaiting the results of the National College Entrance Exam are preoccupied with choosing the right degree course, but a new report suggests that getting onto a good course is no guarantee of a decent job.
The survey, conducted by consulting firm MyCOS, showed that supply is exceeding demand among graduates in the most popular majors, China Youth Daily reports.
It found that 33 per cent of unemployed graduates majored in so-called "hot" courses, such as law.
Dr Wang Boqing of MyCOS told the newspaper that enrolment levels on these courses are to blame for the problem, with many students choosing popular degrees because of suggestions from their parents or teachers, rather than as part of a planned career path.
A separate survey indicates that only 15.9 per cent of students choose their degree on their own, according to China View.
In other jobs news from China, the government in Beijing recently announced that it will offer employment aid to the victims of last month's earthquake.
